Location: Navajo County, Arizona, 10 miles north of Joseph City on Porter Avenue, a county graded road. Subject property is south of the Navajo Nation Reservation, west of the Painted Desert National Monument and 20 miles northeast of Winslow. Carrying Capacity: The livestock carrying capacity for the Ranch is approximately 350 head of mature animals and their young offspring. Production records demonstrate an average of 425 pounds of beef production for each mature cow. The owners have reduced their herd size to better manage the resource during the recent drought. The current herd is made up of younger aged cows (3–6 years old), which are entering into their peak production period.

Grazing Fees: The 2006 Federal Grazing Fee is $1.56 per head per month. Based on 102 animal units, the annual 2006 grazing fee is estimated to be $1,909.44.
Elevation: Black Rock Ranch is located between the elevations of 4,900 to 6,000 feet above sea level.
Climate: The average annual rainfall is between 9 to 11 inches per year. The average date for the latest spring frost is May 1st and the average date for the first fall frost is October 10th.
Forage: Black Rock Ranch has a diverse mix of flora which is very suitable as livestock forage. The mix of forage contains annual grasses, such as: Filaree, Indian Wheat, Fox Tail, Six Weeks Grass; perennial grasses, such as Sacaton, Gramma and Buffalo; and Browse such as Four Wing Salt Brush, Winter Fat, Camelthorn and Tamarisk.

Headquarters: One 12’ by 65’ mobile home; with a 400 square foot perimeter raised porch; and 196 square foot constructed sleeping cabin.

Water: Cottonwood Wash, a tributary of the Little Colorado River, which drains over 500 square miles of watershed and traverses across the length of the Ranch from the northeast to the southwest. The “Cottonwood” provides many benefits to the Ranch. It provides water, which meanders or maintains a pool for approximately one-half of the year, much browse and cover (Cottonwoods and Tamarisk) from heavy winter storms.
